"Beads"

This is my rendition of a painting by Albert Joseph Moore (September 4, 1841~September 25, 1893), an English painter. It was my second time around painting this image, (the first was on a folding screen), so inevitably I got a little playful and began to transpose the figures into mimes, then abandoned the project altogether, sanding it down and painting a landscape on the reverse...I have a photo of the right side of the painting somewhere...

Laburnums blossom only once every other year, but the lush profusion of dazzling yellow blossoms is worth the anticipation. Once I saw a photo of this magical combination of laburnum and allium and it stayed in my mind for years as a perfect matrimony. When the same photo came my way again I felt compelled to execute this small rendition...(which was quickly snapped up to bring cheer into an office environment.)

Crystal Chorus

It was still early spring

Not yet May

The fish huts were gone

from Kempenfelt Bay.

A thick layer of ice

Remained intact

Though worn and weakened

And somewhat cracked.

From the west rose a gale

a fury passed through

Lake waters rose up

Wildness grew

Upheaving ice slabs

More and more

'til they smashed and crashed

Well onto the shore.

We saw they were made

Of crystals--now hollow

Which explained the fairy

Sounds that followed...

Their chaotic colliding

And bumping together

Brought on that day

By the turbulent weather.

The sweet sounds echoed wide

Over the water's splashings

Millions and trillions

Of tinkling clashings

Layers upon layers of fairy bells

Echoed 'round

Rose up to the heavens

We stood small on the ground.

This event was witnessed by my friend Andrew and I at Kempenfelt Bay, Barrie, Ontario, in the mid 1990's. This phenomenon is known as 'candle ice'...see short video here:

My poems resemble the bread of Egypt--one night

passes over it and you can't eat it anymore.

So gobble them down now, while they're still fresh,

before the dust of the world settles on them.

Where a poem belongs is here, in the warmth of the chest;

out in the world it dies of cold.

You've seen a fish--put him on dry land,

he quivers for a few minutes, and then is still.

And even if you eat my poems while they're still fresh,

You still have to bring forward many images yourself.

Actually, friend, what you are eating is your own imagination.

These are not just a bunch of old proverbs.
